General information
This medicine is used to treat and preventing gout flares. It also can be used for treatment of Mediterranean fever. Mechanism of its work is not known.
Directions
Take Colchicine exactly as your doctor prescribed to you which can calculate your dose. Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit during treatment. Do not stop treatment even if you feel better. Do not miss intakes.
Precautions
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, if you are breastfeeding and also about prescription and nonprescription drugs, herbal medications or diets; if you have any problems with liver or kidneys.
Contraindications
Colchicine cannot be taken if you are allergic to its ingredients, if you have problems with liver and kidney. Colchicine is contraindicated if you take such medications as tazanavir, nelfinavir, clarithromycin, cyclosporine, boceprevir, darunavir, itraconazole, ketoconazole, indinavir, nefazodone, posaconazole, ranolazine, ritonavir or any medicine that contains ritonavir, troleandomycin, telithromycin, saquinavir, telaprevir, tipranavir.
Possible side effects
More common adverse reactions to this medicine include: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain. Rare unwanted effects are: black and tarry stools, burning feeling in the skin, difficulty breathing, fever, headache, swelling, weakness in muscles, numbness in the fingers, skin rash or hives, unusual bleeding or bruising.
Drug interaction
These medications are known to interact with colchicines: digoxin, fenofibric acid, gemfibrozil, inhibitors of HMG-Co A reductase such as simvastatin which can increase the risk of severe or fatal muscle problems. Risk of sever and fatal side effects increases also if you take colchicines with amprenavir, azole antifungals (eg, fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole), aprepitant, atazanavir, boceprevir, darunavir, diltiazem, cyclosporine, fosamprenavir, fosaprepitant, indinavir, macrolide antibiotics (troleandomycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin), nelfinavir, nefazodone, ranolazine, ritonavir or any medicine that contains ritonavir, telaprevir, saquinavir, telithromycin, tipranavir; sympathomimetics (such as pseudoephedrine, albuterol).
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include: bleeding, feeling of burning in the stomach, throat or skin, seizures, diarrhea which can be bloody, shallow and fast breathing, nausea, vomiting, pain in the stomach. If you consider that you took too much of this medication contact your doctor immediately.
Storage
Store your medicines at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C). Store away from moisture and light. Keep it out of the reach of children and away from pets.
